Accessibility Guidelines
Send Toys To You is committed to making our website genuinely accessible β not just technically compliant. We know that many of our customers are neurodivergent themselves, and we have built this site with that in mind from the ground up.
1. Our Commitment
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA as a minimum standard. Beyond compliance, we have applied neurodivergent-specific design principles throughout the site based on research into the online experiences of people with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia and sensory processing differences.
Our design principles include:
- Static hero images only β no rotating banners, auto-playing video or auto-playing audio
- Consistent navigation on every page β the same structure, same position, same behaviour throughout
- Left-aligned body text β never justified, which creates irregular spacing harmful to dyslexic readers
- Off-white background rather than pure white, to reduce glare and visual stress
- Clean, humanist sans-serif fonts with clearly distinct characters throughout
- Minimum 16px body text with generous line height (1.6β1.8) throughout
- No countdown timers, urgency mechanics or aggressive pop-ups
- Guest checkout by default β no forced account creation
- Typo-tolerant search with autocomplete and synonym recognition
- All animations tied to explicit user interaction or disabled via prefers-reduced-motion settings
2. Technical Accessibility Features
The following technical features are implemented across the site:
Keyboard navigation
- All interactive elements are reachable and operable via keyboard alone
- Focus indicators are clearly visible on all interactive elements
- Logical tab order follows the visual reading order of the page
Screen reader support
- All images include descriptive alt text
- Decorative images are marked with empty alt attributes
- Form fields include clearly associated labels
- Error messages are specific, helpful and associated with the relevant field
- Page titles are descriptive and unique across the site
Colour and contrast
- All body text meets WCAG AA contrast ratio (minimum 4.5:1)
- Large text meets WCAG AA contrast ratio (minimum 3:1)
- Information is never conveyed by colour alone
- Soft, muted palette used throughout β no high-saturation or clashing colour combinations
Reduced motion
- The site respects the prefers-reduced-motion browser/OS setting
- When reduced motion is enabled, all transitions and animations are suppressed
Touch and mobile
- All tap targets are a minimum of 44Γ44px
- The site is fully responsive and tested on mobile, tablet and desktop
- No hover-only menus β all navigation is accessible without hover
3. Neurodivergent-Specific Design
Beyond standard accessibility, we have applied research-based design decisions for each of the four primary neurodivergent conditions our customers may have:
β‘ ADHD
- No distracting banners, pop-ups or moving elements that could capture attention involuntarily
- One primary call-to-action per page β no competing actions
- Clear progress indicators throughout the checkout process
- Cart and form data is preserved β validation errors do not clear previously entered information
- No countdown timers at checkout
βΎοΈ Autism / ASD
- Consistent, predictable navigation on every page
- No auto-playing audio or unexpected sounds
- Literal, plain-language product descriptions β no sarcasm, idiom or implied meaning
- Chat and email support as the primary contact method β phone is secondary, never the only option
- Clear order confirmation with delivery date shown immediately on purchase
π Dyslexia
- Left-aligned text throughout β never justified
- Clean, spacious sans-serif font with clearly distinct characters
- Off-white background to reduce the blur/river effect on text
- Typo-tolerant search β one misspelled word does not return zero results
- Bullet-point product specs above the fold β not buried in paragraphs
π€Έ Dyspraxia / DCD
- Large, clear click and tap targets β minimum 44px
- No hover-only navigation menus that disappear on slight cursor movement
- Clear breadcrumb navigation on all category and product pages
- No fast-moving carousels or auto-scrolling content
4. Known Limitations
We are continuously improving the site and are aware of the following current limitations:
- Some older product images may not yet have fully descriptive alt text. We are working through these systematically.
- The reading toolbar with font size and background colour controls is planned for a future update.
- Some third-party embedded content (such as Amazon product links) may not fully meet our accessibility standards as these are outside our direct control.
5. Feedback & Contact
If you experience any accessibility barriers on our site, or if you need content in a different format, please get in touch. Your feedback directly shapes how we improve.
